Qualifications and Credit

What credit score do i need to get approved?

The popular lenders like Synchrony and GoodLeap approve borrowers with credit scores in the 600-640 range. Meanwhile “second-look” lenders like Fortiva have no minimum, though the interest rates will usually be significantly higher. There are also some PACE programs that skip credit checks entirely and base approval on your property’s equity instead to get a loan for HVAC.

Most lenders do a soft pull for prequalification, which doesn’t affect your score. A hard pull only when you formally accept a loan offer, and that typically drops your score by 5-10 points temporarily. Although the point drop is not big, it is still a good idea to make a decision on the lender you will use to get a loan for HVAC. This is why we wanted to create the interactive table that has rates, terms, and other information from different lenders.

Yes, through second-look lenders or PACE financing, though you’ll pay a higher rate. Some lease-to-own programs also have no credit requirements.

PACE stands for Property Assessed Clean Energy. It’s a government-backed financing program that lets homeowners fund energy-efficient home improvements -including HVAC systems -and repay the loan through their property tax bill rather than a traditional monthly loan. It’s important to know this essentially places a lien on your property tax bill because the loan is secured by the property rather than your creditworthiness. Approval is still required and it is based on your home equity, not your credit score. California was one of the first states to enable PACE at scale.

The PACE program has some serious downsides and controversy. The lien is senior to your mortgage on some programs, meaning if you sell or refinance, the PACE balance must be paid off first. In addition, some mortgage lenders won’t buy a mortgage with senior PACE liens, which complicate home financing significantly. Lastly, the interest rates can run higher than traditional loans (4.75%-9%), and origination fees can add up to 7% of the loan amount on top of it all.

PACE can be a legitimate option for homeowners with poor credit scores who have no other path to get a loan for HVAC, but it should be a last resort rather than a first choice. For homeowners with decent credit or just a tad bit lower credit, GoodLeap is an excellent choice to save money and have less risk on your property and future home financing.

Rates and Costs

What does 0% financing actually mean -is it really free?

Usually no. Most 0% finance offers are deferred interest, meaning if you don’t pay off the full amount balance before the promotion period ends, all the interest that accumulated gets added back to your balance at once. True 0% with no backdated interests is rare and usually only on a short term. It is not commonly found or used to get a loan for HVAC -more specifically for a new installation, but we highly suggest getting a 0% promotion if you can pay off the entire cost before the terms.

0% financing could work well for lower cost HVAC services. Example if you want to get a small loan for air conditioning part such as the condenser, or a loan for furnace. There’s no denying 0% promotional interest rates for HVAC are phenomenal when you can pay it completely off before the terms expire.

On a $9,000 loan amount and at 6.99% over 60 months, you’re looking at roughly $178 per month. The loan amount, the rate, and the term are the three levers and these determine the total cost at the end of the loan which can easily be calculated by multiplying your monthly payments by the total term.

You want to watch out for origination fees (which is common with PACE programs, up to 7%), dealer fees passed through the contractor, and prepayment penalties (rare but worth asking about). GoodLeap typically has no origination fee.

The Process

How long does approval take?

Most point-of-sale lenders like GoodLeap approve within minutes. Personal loans through banks like Wells Fargo can sometime times be same-day or 2-3 business days. PACE programs take a few days to weeks since they involve property lien filing.

Some contractors partner with lenders and present the financing at the point of sale if a customer feels they need a loan. However, the loan is issued by the bank, not the contractor. If you are approved for a loan, you will make payments to the lender, not the contractor.

Lenders like GoodLeap allow you to easily apply online from your smartphone or on a computer without having to download anything. Other lenders issuing personal loans may require you to visit them in person, but some do have ability to apply online. We believe from our research that GoodLeap is one of the best lenders for HVAC, if not the current best. Therefore, we made it extra easy for you on this page with buttons that say “Apply Now“.

Practical Concerns

What happens if my HVAC system breaks down -do I still owe the loan?

Yes. The loan is separate from any warranty the manufacturer and contractor provides. Loans are similar to credit cards and other loans, the loan agreements have nothing to do with the products or services you pay for.

Majority of credit cards have much higher interest rates so you would be paying a higher total. Credit cards would only make sense if you received and qualified for a promotion such as a 0% interest rate, however, you would need to pay off the total balance before the 0% interest promotion ends so you do not get hit with backdated interests rates. For these reasons, financing through a dedicated lender almost always wins -lower APR, fixed payments, and longer terms.

With most installment lenders yes, and with no penalty. Always confirm this before signing.

Contractors typically offer one or two lender options. We can’t speak for other contractors but here at Eco Air Heating and Cooling, as you can see by the amount of resources in the page, we put an immense focus on helping people not only get approvals, but also get the best rates and terms. Eco Air is here to help you in any way we can.
